Under-Secretary for Family and Life

Married and mother of five, Prof. Gabriella Gambino was born in Milan in 1968.

A graduate in Political Science from the University of Milan, she received her Ph.D. in Bioethics in 2001 from the Institute of Bioethics of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Rome.

From 2001 to 2007, she was a Professor, studied and researched bioethics at the Institute of Methodology of the Social Sciences at the LUISS-Guido Carli University in Rome.

From 2002 to 2006, she was appointed Scientific Expert of the National Committee for Bioethics, at the Prime Minister's Office.

Until 2017 she was an Aggregate Professor of Bioethics at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Rome "Tor Vergata" and a researcher in philosophy of law at the Faculty of Law of the same university.

Since 2005 she has been a Professor of Philosophy of the Family, Bioethics and Biolaw at the Pontifical Theological Institute John Paul II for Marriage and Family Sciences (Lateran University).

In 2017, she was Visiting Professor at the Brazilian section of the Institute of the Universidade Católica do Salvador (Bahia).

From 2013 to 2016, she worked with the Pontifical Council for the Laity, including as a speaker at conferences organized by the Pontifical Council (2013) and the Pontifical Academy for Life (2016).

As the author of numerous publications (monographs, edited works and essays), Prof. Gabriella Gambino has devoted herself, in particular, to the themes of human life, marriage and family.

On November 7, 2017, she was appointed by Pope Francis as Under-Secretary of the Dicastery for the Laity, Family and Life.

In 2022 the appointment of Undersecretary of the Dicastery was renewed by the Holy Father for another five-year term.
