“The Joy of Loving” is the theme of the Residential Course of Theological Update for Priests that will be held in Bologna, on 7 and 8 June. The aim of the initiative, promoted by the Faculty of Theology of Emilia-Romagna and co-funded by the Italian Bishops’ Conference, is “to offer some key words for study and a pastoral interpretation of Pope Francis’ recent Apostolic Exhortation Amoris Laetitia—explain the organizers—through an interdisciplinary approach.” A sociological analysis of the present situation of marriage and family in the country will be followed by a biblical and theological reading of the document, with the aim of identifying some pastoral perspectives. The promoters added that “particular attention will be paid to hearing about experiences of accompanying couples and families, especially in times of greatest difficulty.”

After the introduction, on the morning of June 7th, during the section “A Contemplative Look,” organized by Msgr. Enrico Solmi, Bishop of Parma, the sociologist Chiara Giaccardi will speak about marriage and the family in the present context, and the biblical perspectives of Amoris Laetitia will be presented by Msgr. Ermenegildo Manicardi, former head of the Theological Faculty of Emilia-Romagna and professor of theology at the Gregorian University.

“Continuity and Development in the Magisterium on Marriage and Family,” is the theme of the lecture with which Msgr. Massimo Cassani, Bishopric Vicar for family and life in the diocese of Bologna, will open the section dedicated to the intelligence of faith; then, Fr. Sandro Dalle Fratte, head of the Family Ministry Office in the Diocese of Treviso, will speak. The morning of the following day, June 8th, will be devoted to the preparation for the sacrament of marriage and accompanying the spouses, with a report on experiences by Fr. Paolo Gentili, director of the Family Ministry Office of the Italian Bishops’ Conference, and the Bolognese family consultation program “Retrouvaille.” Finally, in the section on discernment, the speakers will be Msgr. Stefano Ottani, Vicar General for Synodality in the Diocese of Bologna, and Msgr. Sergio Casini, Vicar Adjunct to the Emilian Regional Tribunal.
