The Year of the Laity opens today, 26 November, Solemnity of Christ the King. The Church in Brazil will be actively engaged in this initiative until 25 November 2018.

The theme chosen to promote the Year of the Laity is: “Christian Lay Men and Women, Actors in the ‘Outgoing Church,’ Serving the Kingdom” and its motto is “Salt of Earth and Light of the World” (Mt 5:13–14).

The objective, says Msgr. Severino Clasen, Bishop of Caçador and president of the Episcopate’s Special Commission for the Year of the Laity, is “to encourage lay people and give them a new impetus. We know that the laity’s participation in the Church is great, but sometimes their contribution is overlooked and underestimated.”
