HISTORY

Frater was founded in 1945 in the French city of Verdun by Reverend Henri François, under the name Fraternité Catholique de Malades. With an understanding of the depth and effectiveness of apostolate among sick people, its inspiration came from the command Jesus gave to the paralytic who had been healed: “rise, pick up your mat, and go” (cf. Mk 2:11).

It was recognised in 1957 by the Assembly of Cardinals and Archbishops of France, and then quickly spread to other countries in Europe, Africa, Latin America and Asia. On 11 February 1995, the Pontifical Council for the Laity decreed the recognition of the Fraternité Chrétienne Intercontinentale des Personnes Malades Chroniques et Handicapées Physiques as an international association of the faithful. Later, the Frater changes its name to Fraternidad Cristiana Intercontinental de Personas con Discapacidad.

IDENTITY

The main focus of Frater is the evangelisation of the sick and disabled. The life of its members is deeply rooted in the spirit of the Gospel. It is addressed to all people without distinction who have chronic illnesses or disabilities. It promotes personal and community cohesion among its members and seeks their all-round development so as to encourage their full social inclusion while also renewing society.

ORGANISATION

The Intercontinental Frater is composed of the continental fraternities, and they in turn comprise the affiliated national fraternities. These are made up of all the base groups or nuclei within their respective country. Frater is animated by leadership teams who receive support and encouragement for their activities from the councillors or advisers who actively participate in team life.

WORKS

Frater is a movement of people with disabilities, bearers of the Good News of God who is Love and Life and wants every person to be happy. The Association addresses all aspects of the human person and works for the development and social integration of people who are sick, whether with or without disabilities. It is a way of making God known through the gestures and words of Jesus Christ who says, “rise, pick up your mat, and go”.
