“The conjugal bond and sacramental character: A new corporeality” is the theme of the IV Sacramental Theology Colloquium, which will be hosted by the Pontifical John Paul II Institute on 28 April. “The meeting organized by the International Area of Research in Sacramental Theology—explain the coordinators—aims to reflect on the meaning of the marital bond, the foundation of the indissoluble and procreative relationship between spouses. We will study specifically the relationship of this bond with the character imprinted by some sacraments, character which indissolubly binds the faithful to the body of Christ. Our theological reflection hopes to illuminate the pastoral care of the marital bond, which according to Amoris Laetitia, is at the center of all premarital and marital pastoral care.”

The first session, focused on “The conjugal bond: A new way of living in the flesh,” will be introduced by Pierangelo Sequeri, President of the Institute, and moderated by Jean Laffitte, Prelate of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. José Granados (John Paul II Institute) will speak on “A new way of being in the body: The conjugal bond,” Carmine Di Martino (University of Milan) will give a lecture on “ Identity and Alterity: The Logic of the Gift and the Test of Time,” and Carlo José Errazuriz (Pontifical University of the Holy Cross) will speak about “The dimension of justice of the marital bond in the Church.”

The speakers of the second session, focused on “Accompanying the conjugal bond,” will be Philippe Vallin (University of Strasbourg) with a report on “The conjugal bond in the light of the definitiveness of Christ,” Luca Pedroli (Pontifical Biblical Institute) on “One flesh (Gen 2:24) and incorporation into Christ: The relation between baptism and matrimony in the Scriptures,” and Monika Grygiel (Pontifical John Paul II Institute) on “Family bonds and the constitution of personal identity.”
