Starting tomorrow, Friday, the Dicastery for the Laity, Family and Life will host an international meeting on the promotion and formation of the lay faithful, with the participation of representatives of fifteen Episcopal conferences from around the world.

The meeting starts from the answers received to the letter sent to all the Bishops’ Conferences in 2017 to learn about the initiatives and activities being carried out in each country, at the level of local churches and parishes, with the aim of enhancing the role and the vocation of the lay faithful in the Church and in society.

The purpose of this meeting will be to identify the best initiatives for forming the lay faithful to express their vocation and baptismal mission fully, in accordance with the diversity of each country’s cultures and traditions. It will also be useful to deepen the methods of help, support, and encouragement that the Dicastery can offer to dioceses and Bishops’ Conferences that have not yet developed modes of formation other than those linked to preparation for the sacraments. The meeting will make it possible to establish a relationship of communion and mutual collaboration between the office of the Dicastery that deals with the promotion and formation of lay faithful and the local churches, so that what the Holy Spirit inspires among the faithful in the field of formation and promotion of the laity in the world may be known and shared.

Three representatives of movements who stand out in the formation of the laity together with the parishes and within them will also participate in the three-day meeting. Furthermore, two guests engaged in public life and in the world of work and business will present their initiatives, which, although private, share the objective of enhancing the role of the lay faithful in society.
