Adopting the words of the Secretary of State, Card. Pietro Parolin, the Archbishop of Chicago, reiterated in his lecture at the Annual Meeting of the Von Hugel Institute that the Apostolic Exhortation Amoris Laetitia “arose from a new paradigm that Pope Francis is carrying out with wisdom, prudence and even patience.”

According to Cardinal Cupich, the Church’s approach is attentive to how today’s couples and families are living a complexity of the reality that is profoundly different from that of the past and treasures the work of the two Synods on the family that has offered “new hermeneutics” for the Church’s approach to families.

Some principles sum up the new gaze on the family: it is a privileged place where God reveals himself; the synodal Church accompanies families by balancing teaching and learning, paying attention to the voice of the laity and especially to what is said about marriage and family life.

The Church—so that there may be no misunderstanding—does not cease proposing the full ideal of marriage, through accompanies the conscience of faithful in view of an essential discernment.
