“Step outside of repetitive habits, projects, or ways of meeting, and abandon self-referentiality, so as to promote better mutual knowledge and cohesion, and to grow in authentic communion.” This is the wish that Linda Ghisoni, Undersecretary of the Dicastery, expressed to the participants in the First National Assembly of Lay Movements of Peru, which gathered via videoconference on Saturday 6 March and Sunday 7 March, on the initiative of the Commission for the Youth and the Laity of the Peruvian Episcopal Conference.

The virtual gathering was organized within the restrictions imposed by the ongoing pandemic, which nevertheless “presses us on towards a meeting.” So said Linda Ghisoni, who issued a call for the leaving behind of ordinary activities or coming out of the sense of paralysis into which one risks falling, for the primary goal of rediscovering “the profound identity” that unites these realities: i.e., “the ecclesial identity.” The theme of the Assembly, “walking together,” can be realized only by virtue of the baptism that inserts each believer into the one living body which is the Church.

The objectives of the virtual meeting include a desire to acknowledge the presence of the laity in the activity of the Church in Peru.
