HISTORY

The Covenant of Love with the Sacred Heart of Jesus was founded through the initiative of the Blessed Concepción Cabrera de Armida. It was approved by a decree issued by the Venerable Servant of God, Archbishop Ramón Ibarra y González of Puebla, Mexico, on 3 November 1909 and it was founded in that city on the 8th of the same month and year. Archbishop José Mora y del Río of Mexico City signed the decree of approval for the Primate Archdiocese of Mexico City on 12 November 1909. Pope Pius X granted indulgences to the AASCJ and gave it the official name “Covenant of Love with the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus”. On 24 October 2006 in Vatican City, the Pontifical Council for the Laity issued the decree of recognition of the AASCJ as an international association of the faithful.

IDENTITY

The AASCJ brings together lay people who are called by God to embrace their baptismal holiness and cultivate it in fraternal communion. They do so through an explicit commitment to bring to fulfilment their covenant of love with God which began at baptism.

The Spirituality of the Cross is the specific way in which the AASCJ seeks holiness. It consists in offering oneself to the Father together with Jesus at the prompting of the Holy Spirit for the salvation of the world and the holiness of priests.

The spirituality of the AASCJ is based on two essential elements: close union with the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the sanctification of the world. It carries out its ecclesial mission through specific apostolic activities that are aimed at bringing about change to the temporal sphere. It promotes the human and Christian values of families and of all states of life in the world.

ORGANISATION

Small Communities are the basic cells of the AASCJ. They consist of eight to twelve people. Members strive to be a true Christian community in which they encourage each other to be committed and to grow in faith and charity, to continue their self-development and carry out their mission.

One or more Small Communities, if they are competent in self-management, can be constituted as a Local Centre which reports to the authority of the Central Council.

The ministry of leadership in the AASCJ is carried out by the Presidents and Councils at various levels who ordinarily exercise collegial authority.

The highest authority is exercised by the President of the Central Council and periodically by the General Assembly.
