A few days ago, the relay team “Evangelii Gaudium” shined forth with a great victory at the XII Super Marathon of Etna, a race of 43 km, from the coasts in the province of Catania to the summit of Etna, for a total height difference of almost 3,000 meters.

After the ritual signatures and the blessing of the Ionian Sea, the international competition started. Fr. Vincenzo Puccio, parish priest in Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto (Messina), Fr. Franco Torresani, the only religious who wore the blue tee-shirt of the National Mountain Race team, currently parish priest in Arco di Trento, and Fr. Gianni Buontempo, in charge of our Dicastery’s relations with ecclesial movements and new communities, were among the competitors.

At the award ceremony, which took place in Linguaglossa, the three priests received a plaque from the hands of Fr. Orazio Barbarino, parish priest at the Chiesa Matrice, who highlighted the presence of the Church among the people also in the sports world. On the next day, the members of the team “Evangelii Gaudium” met a group of athletes from the province of Messina, including the sprinter Maria Ruggeri, and had the occasion to talk with them about the Dicastery’s document “Giving the Best of Yourself. On the Christian Perspective of Sports and the Human Person”, published at the beginning of June.
