On October 1st, the President of the Retina d'Oro, Mauro Rufini together with Sports Director, Giampiero Caneschi, presented the "Special 2021 Retina d'Oro Award" to the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life, in the presence of the Dicastery's Secretary, Fr. Alexandre Awi Mello, and the Head of the Office for Church and Sport, Dr. Santiago Pérez de Camino.

The award, established 20 years ago, is dedicated to institutions, entities, prominent people, and athletes who, through their activities and commitment, bring to light the value and educational proposal of sports activities. The award also goes to projects that strive to promote solidarity and social inclusion through sport, taking up Pope Francis' invitation to work with sports in programs and projects that promote education and encounters.

In the President's words, "the valuable work that the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life and its office for Church and Sport are carrying out in this direction is of great importance," particularly with the publication in 2018 of the document "Giving the Best of Yourself," the Holy See's first document on the Christian perspective on sports.

“The values that have always inspired our award are in great harmony with the Magisterium of the Church. Among the Retina's special awards are also included recognition of the Sports' Office of the Italian Episcopal Conference in 2012 and the Pontifical Foundation Scholas Occurrentes in 2019, tangible signs of the presence and work of the Church.”

The Secretary, Fr. Alexandre Awi Mello, in receiving this award, underlined how this award "brings honor to the Dicastery and pushes us to promote faith and values through sport. In the Dicastery we are aware that practicing sports is a fundamental element in the growth and integral development of people, both on a human and spiritual level, and this award helps to strengthen the ethical and human values of sports, with initiatives aimed at proposing and promoting the educational value of practicing sports.”
