This morning, 24 September, the Press Conference “Towards World Youth Day Seoul 2027” took place.

“You also are my witnesses, because you have been with me” and “Take courage! I have overcome the world!”

In the Holy See Press Office, in the presence of journalists and communication professionals, the themes chosen by the Holy Father for the 40th and 41st World Youth Day were announced. The theme chosen by Pope Francis for the 40th World Youth Day (2025) is: “You also are my witnesses, because you have been with me” (cf. John 15:27); and the theme for the 41st World Youth Day (2026 and Seoul 2027) is: “Take courage! I have overcome the world!” (cf. John 16:33).

24 November 2024: the traditional handing over of the WYD symbols from Lisbon to Seoul

Cardinal Kevin J. Farrell, Prefect of the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life, addressed the Conference, moderated by Dr. Cristiane Murray, Deputy Director of the Press Office. The Prefect also recalled that the World Day will be celebrated at the level of particular Churches on 24 November, in Saint Peters’ Basilica, when the traditional handing over of the WYD symbols will take place: the Youth Cross and the Icon of Mary Salus populi romani. The handover will take place during the Holy Mass and will be carried out by the young people of Lisbon – organizers of the WYD 2023 – to the young people of Seoul – organizers of the next WYD Seoul 2027. The symbols will then start their usual three-year pilgrimage to the host country and neighbouring countries.

The official logo for WYD Seoul 2027: the call to the young people of Korea and the world to proclaim the faith of the martyrs to the world of our time

Along with the themes chosen for the next two WYDs and the announcement of the handing over of the symbols, the official logo for the WYD 2027 was also revealed. The logo for the WYD Seul 2027 captures the vision and aspirations of this momentous event and is centred around the theme “Take courage! I have overcome the world!” (John 16:33), chosen by the Holy Father. It integrates the multiple meanings of martyrdom, youth, Seoul, WYD, and the Cross, celebrating the glory of victory achieved through the Holy Spirit. It heralds the call to the young people of Korea and the world to proclaim the faith of the martyrs to the world of our time.

H.E. Mons. Peter Soon-Taick Chung, O.C.D., Archbishop of Seoul and President of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for Seoul 2027, H.E. Mons. Paul Kyung Sang Lee, General Coordinator of the World Youth Day Seoul 2027, and Miss Gabriela Su-Ji Kim, a young Korean, also addressed the Press Conference.
