A celebration of generations: the Jubilee for Families, Children, Grandparents and the Elderly

Engaged couples, married couples, parents, children, grandparents, uncles, aunts, young people and the elderly: families from all over the world gathered in Rome from 30 May to 1 June to experience the Jubilee dedicated to them. It was, in essence, a true celebration of the family, or rather of the generations united in the wonderful family bond created by marriage between a man and a woman, bearers of hope and the future in an uncertain and difficult present.

A packed programme of activities (www.iubilaeum2025. va) took place over three days in Rome, with opportunities for reflection and study, but also space for games for the little ones and liturgical and spiritual moments dedicated to family holiness.

On Friday afternoon, at the Church of Trinità dei Monti, thousands of families received a blessing in front of the relics of St. Thérèse of Lisieux and her parents, Zelia and Louis Martin. On Saturday 31, many were able to participate in the seminar sponsored by the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life on the theme ‘Family Networks for the Future of the Church’ at LUMSA University.

Prayer vigil and Holy Mass with Pope Leo XIV

On Saturday evening, the intergenerational celebration culminated in a moment of music, singing and testimonies in Piazza San Giovanni in Laterano. The celebration ended with a prayer vigil led by His Excellency Monsignor Dario Gervasi, Adjunct Secretary of the Dicastery. The families present in the square entrusted the families of the whole world to Mary, Mother of God and of the Church, at the end of the Marian month.

The Mass presided over by Pope Leo XIV concluded the celebrations. The Holy Father summarised the beauty and richness of family relationships in his homily: "Therefore, I encourage [you parents] to be examples of consistency for your children, behaving as you want them to behave, educating them in freedom through obedience, always seeking the good in them and the means to increase it. And you, children, be grateful to your parents: saying “thank you” for the gift of life and for everything that comes with it every day is the first way of honouring your father and mother (cf. Ex 20:12). Finally, to you, dear grandparents and elderly people, I recommend that you watch over those you love with wisdom and compassion, with the humility and patience that the years teach. In the family, faith is passed on together with life, from generation to generation: it is shared like the food on the table and the affections of the heart. This makes it a privileged place to encounter Jesus, who loves us and wants our good, always.

Fidanzati, coppie sposate, genitori, figli, nonni, zii, giovani e anziani: le famiglie del mondo si sono ritrovate a Roma, dal 30 maggio al 1 giugno, per vivere il momento giubilare a loro dedicato. Si è trattato, in sostanza, di una vera a propria festa della famiglia, o meglio delle generazioni unite nel meraviglioso vincolo familiare generato dal matrimonio tra un uomo e una donna, portatori di speranza e di futuro, in un presente incerto e difficile.

Il programma del Giubileo delle Famiglie, dei Bambini, dei Nonni e degli Anziani 

Un programma denso di attività (www.iubilaeum2025. va) si è svolto nella tre-giorni romana, con proposte di riflessione e di studio, ma anche di spazi per il gioco per i più piccoli e di momenti liturgici e spirituali dedicati alla santità familiare.

Venerdì 30 pomeriggio, presso la Chiesa di Trinità dei Monti, migliaia di famiglie hanno ricevuto la benedizione davanti alle reliquie di Santa Teresa di Lisieux e dei suoi genitori Zelia e Luigi Martin; sabato 31, in molti hanno potuto partecipare al Seminario patrocinato dal Dicastero per i Laici, la Famiglia e la Vita sul tema ““Reti di famiglie per il futuro della Chiesa”, presso l’Università LUMSA.

La veglia di preghiera e la Santa Messa con Papa Leone XIV

Sabato sera, la festa intergenerazionale è culminata in un momento di musica, canti e testimonianze, in Piazza San Giovanni in Laterano. La festa si è conclusa con la veglia di preghiera guidata da S. Ecc. Mons. Dario Gervasi, Segretario aggiunto del Dicastero. Le famiglie presenti in piazza hanno, così, affidato a Maria Madre di Dio e della Chiesa, le famiglie di tutto il mondo a conclusione del mese mariano.

La Messa presieduta da Papa Leone XIV ha concluso le celebrazioni. Il Santo Padre ha riassunto la bellezza e la ricchezza delle relazioni familiari nella sua omelia: “Perciò incoraggio [voi genitori] ad essere, per i vostri figli, esempi di coerenza, comportandovi come volete che loro si comportino, educandoli alla libertà mediante l’obbedienza, cercando sempre in essi il bene e i mezzi per accrescerlo. E voi, figli, siate grati ai vostri genitori: dire “grazie”, per il dono della vita e per tutto ciò che con esso ci viene donato ogni giorno, è il primo modo di onorare il padre e la madre (cfr Es 20,12). Infine a voi, cari nonni e anziani, raccomando di vegliare su coloro che amate, con saggezza e compassione, con l’umiltà e la pazienza che gli anni insegnano. In famiglia, la fede si trasmette insieme alla vita, di generazione in generazione: viene condivisa come il cibo della tavola e gli affetti del cuore. Ciò la rende un luogo privilegiato in cui incontrare Gesù, che ci vuole bene e vuole il nostro bene, sempre”.
